MPI Nicaragua: Community in Focus

The Clinic
La Chureca is a community located literally within Managua’s municipal city dump where disease, drug abuse, and sexual violence permeate inhabitants’ daily lives. Manna Project’s main focus in La Chureca is on Health. Currently, with the financial support of Austin Samaritans, MPI supports a small clinic that is located within the dump. The clinic, “Casa Base de Salud,” is run by the Nicaraguan foundation, FUNJOFUDESS, and provides general medical attention 5 days a week, as well as health education and promotion. Also, with the support of Austin Samaritans, and the Samaritan clinic in Managua, medical services will be expanded at the clinic in 2008 to include dentistry and gynecology.  (Learn more about La Chureca and the clinic.)

MPI Child Sponsorship
MPI also supports the clinic through our Child Sponsorship Program for malnourished children. We connect donors in the States with specific children who are clinically malnourished. Our program provides children with monthly supplies of oatmeal, vitamin-enriched milk, children’s vitamins, and doctor visits, all of which are coordinated through the clinic. (Learn more about our Child Sponsorship Program.)

Medical Brigade Visits
As visiting medical teams frequently offer their services in La Chureca, MPI coordinates with these teams and the clinic to ensure a sustainable approach to meeting the health needs of the community. (To learn more about Medical team visits contact erin@mannaproject.org.)

Other Programs and Partners
Believing in a holistic approach to community development, MPI also strives to work alongside and support fellow organizations working in La Chureca, including Colegio Esperanza, and the after school programs at Juntos Contigo.
